TO THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF ONTARIO:

WHEREAS thousands of families across Ontario have mourned loved ones tragically and needlessly lost to gun violence.

WHEREAS there are many innocent victims whose lives will never be the same, who have suffered life-long injuries or deep emotional trauma, because of illegal guns on our streets.

WHEREAS this bill would help save families and victims the anguish and life-altering impact of gun violence by giving Ontario more tools and power to stop the flow of illegal guns from the source.

WHEREAS the bill requires Ontario’s Attorney General to investigate and initiate legal action against American gun manufacturers who are alleged to be facilitating the flow of handguns out of the United States into Canada. The Attorney General would be required to consult with experts and affected communities to develop a legal strategy to stop the entry and sales of illegal handguns in Ontario.

WHEREAS this bill is just one part of a larger strategy to address gun violence and its root causes, especially poverty, systemic racism, and lack of opportunity for young people.

TO THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF ONTARIO:

WHEREAS the Ford government did not notify City of Toronto staff or City Councillors prior to issuing Ministerial Zoning Orders for three sites in the West Don Lands;

WHEREAS these orders sidestep the local planning process and shutter community input;

WHEREAS local planning should be driven by local communities and the long-term public interest, not dictated by heavy handed orders from the province;

THEREFORE, we the undersigned, petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to Call on the provincial government to stop its lobbyist-driven MZOs in the West Don Lands and elsewhere, and restore transparent and evidence-based planning that includes public consultation and respect for heritage conservation, the environment and local decision-making.

Freeze Rent Increase Guidelines

TO THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF ONTARIO:

Whereas Letting landlords raise rents before tenants have recovered from the pandemic is the wrong move; and

Whereas Ontario should be freezing its rent increase guideline at zero again in 2022 and providing rent subsidies to tenants who are still struggling from income and job losses caused by the pandemic; and

Whereas Toronto’s residential rental vacancy rate is 1.1%; and

Whereas the average rent for a 1-bedroom apartment in Toronto is over $2,000/month (highest in the country); and

Whereas the waitlist for social housing in Ontario is nearing 200,000 households; and

Whereas the Ford Government eliminated rent control protections on new rental housing; and

Whereas every person deserves access to safe, affordable, and livable housing.

We the undersigned petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as follows:

  • Freeze rent increase guidelines at zero for 2022
  • End Vacancy Decontrol: Landlords should not be able to increase rents to whatever amount they want when a tenant moves out
  • Strengthen the Residential Tenancies Act to protect tenants from renovictions and illegal evictions

The climate crisis is threatening our planet and our communities. Peter and the ONDP have a plan for climate, jobs, and justice that will bring all Ontarians a healthy and prosperous future.

Repeal Bill 124 and Support Frontline Workers

It's not that complicated...

Pay workers well, make the rules fair when they negotiate wages and working conditions, treat them with respect.

The Doug Ford government:

  • Must immediately repeal Bill 124,
  • Stop interfering with workers’ collective bargaining rights, and
  • Finally give working Ontarians the respect they deserve.

Add your name below to demand that Ford repeal his low wage Bill 124, that caps all public sector employees’ pay so it falls behind the rate of inflation.

STOP FORD’S HEALTH CARE PRIVATIZATION PLAN

The NDP believes you should get health care based on need — not the size of your wallet.

Doug Ford and Health Minister Sylvia Jones say they’re planning to privatize parts of health care.

STOP FORD’S HEALTH CARE PRIVATIZATION PLAN - 2024

TO THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF ONTARIO:

WHEREAS Ontarians should get health care based on need — not the size of your wallet;

WHEREAS Premier Doug Ford and Health Minister Sylvia Jones are privatizing parts of health care;

WHEREAS privatization will bleed nurses, doctors and PSWs out of our public hospitals, making the health care crisis worse;

WHEREAS privatization always ends with patients getting a bill;

THEREFORE, WE THE UNDERSIGNED petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to immediately stop all plans to further privatize Ontario’s health care system, and fix the crisis in health care by:

  • Stopping its appeal to reinstate Bill 124 and start recruiting, retaining and respecting doctors, nurses and PSWs with better pay and better working conditions.
  • Licensing tens of thousands of internationally educated nurses and other health care professionals already in Ontario, who wait years and pay thousands to have their credentials certified.
  • Making education and training free or low-cost for nurses, doctors and other health care professionals.
  • Incentivizing doctors and nurses to choose to live and work in Northern Ontario.
  • Funding hospitals to have enough nurses on every shift, on every ward.

TO THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF ONTARIO:

WHEREAS Premier Doug Ford has decided to protect the profits of Enbridge with the introduction of Bill 165, Keeping Energy Costs Down, 2024;

WHEREAS Enbridge Inc. is a Canadian multinational oil and gas distribution company;

WHEREAS on December 21st, 2023 Ontario’s independent energy regulator (Ontario Energy Board OEB) decided to protect Enbridge customers from having to subsize Enbridge’s gas expansion plans because it raises energy bills for existing gas customers and new homebuyers, while also increasing financial risks for the whole gas system;

WHEREAS the very next day, the Ford government announced it would reverse the OEB decision and protect the interests of Enbridge;

WHEREAS ending the subsidy would save gas customers over $1 billion over 4 years in avoided pipeline subsidy costs, which comes to over $300 per customer (plus interest/profit payments paid by customers to Enbridge Gas on those amounts);

WHEREAS ending the subsidy will also encourage developers to install heat pumps in new homes instead of gas, which provides much cheaper heating and cooling for new homebuyers;

WHEREAS ending the subsidy would be a win-win-win-win, for the climate, new homebuyers and all Ontarians;

THEREFORE, WE THE UNDERSIGNED petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to defeat Bill 165, Keeping Energy Costs Down, 2024 and if the bill is passed, call on the Legislature to rescind as quickly as possible.

TO THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF ONTARIO:

WHEREAS the Ontario Science Centre has been a beloved institution and heritage site in Ontario for over 50 years, helping children develop curiosity and a love of science for more than half a century;

WHEREAS Premier Ford’s plans to demolish the existing Science Centre building, which is an architecturally-significant historical landmark, and build a new site at Ontario Place that would be half the size;

WHEREAS The current site serves as a treasured community hub and tourist location that serves the communities of Thorncliffe Park and Flemingdon Park,

WHEREAS Toronto should have landmarks throughout the city, and not just downtown;

WHEREAS The government has refused to reveal how much their plan to relocate the Science Centre will cost, much less provide any numbers, facts, or business cases to explain why this plan was made;

THEREFORE we, the undersigned, petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as follows:

  • Immediately reverse the decision to demolish and move the Ontario Science Centre, and instead complete the long-delayed repairs to this irreplaceable heritage building, so it can continue to serve the local community and all Ontarians;
  • Hold and respect community consultations about the Ontario Science Centre's future.
